The Monte Palace Hotel
⌚ READING TIME | 5MIN
In one of my posts recently, I talked about Monte Palace Hotel, at Vista do Rei viewpoint. An abandoned Hotel on the best spot in São Miguel! What the heck?!?
It all start in 1989 (I wasn’t here yet!!) when the Hotel was opened to the public as a 5 star Hotel and the most luxurious in São Miguel. One year and a half later they closed it.
Between 1990 and 2010, the Hotel, which has more than 80 rooms, two restaurants, pubs and a disco, had permanent security. As soon as it no longer had permanent security since 2011, Monte Palace was assaulted. All the furniture, doors and toilets were taken by the locals.
There is nothing between the inside and the outside besides the walls. All the windows are broken. Without the windows you are able to smell the nature around the abandoned hotel. The Monte Palace Hotel is open to the public since it has no control or security.
Looking through the broken windows of the empty rooms you can awe the Sete Cidades Lagoon – it’s like a painting, just this one is real! The windows are the frames of it.
As a result, it’s now considered a must-visit place.
In 2017, this building was bought by a Chinese group which promises to re-open it in 2021 and I hope one day to go back to see it working. Who knows maybe I’ll be staying there.
Have a look now on the following pictures, before and after:
